HCU - Hyderabad Political Science Admissions

Department of Political Science at the University of Hyderabad (HCU) is one of the highly reputed and out standing departments in the country. The department offer M.A., Integrated MA, M.Phil and Ph.D courses. The department has SAP with focus on Globalization, State, Civil Society and governance interface. The Political Science department also has Faculty and student exchange programmes with the Upscale University, Sweden. The Political Science department offer core courses on Political Thought, Indian Political Process, International Relations, Public Administration, Comparative Politics and Public Policy. Haragopal, I Ramabrahmam, Jyothirmaya Sharma, PC Sarangi, Sanjay Palshikar, AK Patnaik, K Chinnaya Suri etc. Following are the details of various programmes, eligibility, entrance exams, previous entrance papers and application procedure:

1) M.A. Political Science: The programme mainly focus on latest political and theoretical trends and an overview of the major approaches to the study of politics. There will be optional courses in the second year of the course. Candidates can select from advances areas like Human Rights, Feminism and Postmodernism and vulnerable or marginalized groups. The written test for M.A. Political Science consists of three parts. These are Part-A for 30 marks (multiple choice type questions that test the general and subject knowledge of the candidate), Part-B for 30 marks (passages of general type to test reading comprehension abilities of the candidates) and Part - C for 40 marks with two essay type questions. M.A. Economics is another prestigious programme of the School of Social Sciences.

2) M.Phil in Political Science: This is a one year programme with course work in the first semester and dissertation in the second semester. The entrance examination for Political Science consists of written test and interviews. Written test consists of 10 essay type questions and candidates have to answer any three questions. Each question carries 25 marks for a total of 75 marks. The questions in this part cover Political Theory, International Relations,
Comparative Politics, Indian Government and Politics and Public Policy or Public Administration. There will be interview for those qualified in the written test. UGC-JRF candidates will be exempted from written test.

3) Ph.D. in Political Science: The Ph.D programme is a full fledged and extensive research course with course work and research thesis. Candidates have to submit a research proposal along with the application for admission. The proposal should contain hypothesis, goals or objectives, statement of the problem and methods of executing the proposal. This is an essential requirement for admission to Ph.D. programme. Entrance exam for Ph.D. consists of two parts. Part-A consists of three questions out of which candidates have to attempt only one. It carries 25 marks. Part-B contains of a total of 10 questions covering different areas of Political Science. Total written test will be for 75 marks and interview will be for 25 marks. Candidates with UGC JRF or RGNFs will be exempted from written test as per the UGC norms.
