1) MA Sociology and Integrated MA (Social Sciences): The department of Sociology is offering courses such as Introduction to the Study of Society, Urban Societies; Contemporary Development Issues; Introduction to Social Research; Work and Organisations etc. in Integrated Five Year Course. In MA Programme, the department offer 10 compulsory courses and another 6 optional courses. The department is offering advanced optionals such as NGOs and Development, Indian Diaspora, Sociology of Health, Sickness and Healing, Rural Society and Agrarian Change, Sociology of Gender, Sociology of Backward Classes, Science, Culture and Society, Technology, Culture and Society, Sociology of Communication etc. The written test for admission into the M.A. Sociology is divided into two Sections. The Section - A will be for 25 marks. This consists of objective type of questions to test the comprehension of a given passage, simple arithmetic and reasoning abilities. Section B deals with a precis writing, a short note (about 150 words) and an essay (about 500 words) on a contemporary social issue or theme. This will be for a maximum of 75 marks.
2) M.Phil. programme: This is a basic research course with the duration of two semesters. There will be a course work in the first semester. Candidates should write a dissertation by the end of the second semester. Selection of the candidates will be based on written test and interview. Questions will be asked on M.A. standard sociological theory and methods in general and also in the context of India.
3) Ph.D. (Sociology): This is a full time and comprehensive research programme. Minimum duration of the course is two years. There will be a written test and interview for short listing the candidates. The written test for Ph.D. will test student's knowledge of sociological theory and methods. Interview will be generally on the topic of research and basics of the subject. Candidates should submit a research proposal in the process of application.
Prominent faculty members in the department include Prof. E.Haribabu, Sasheej Hegde, Vinod K. Jairath, Sujata Patel, K. Laxmi Narayana, Aparna Rayaprol, N. Purendra Prasad, Nagaraju Gundimeda etc. University of Hyderabad will announce admission notification for MA, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes during March - April 2012. The entrance examinations will be held in May and the class work usually will commence in June.
