GATE - Changed Examination Structure

The GATE examination has been undergone many changes from this year. This year GATE consists of a single question paper of 3 hours duration. The question paper will contain 60 multiple choice questions for a maximum of 100 marks. There will be negative marking also for wrong answers. This applies as given in question paper pattern.

Candidates aspiring to appear for GATE 2010 have to choose any one of the papers given below:

Aerospace Engineering (AE)
Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC)
Electrical Engineering (EE)
Civil Engineering (CE)
Chemical Engineering (CH)
Agricultural Engineering (AG)
Architecture and Planning (AR)
Computer Science and Information Technology (CS)
Chemistry (CY)
Mining Engineering (MN)
Metallurgical Engineering (MT)
Geology and Geophysics (GG)
Mechanical Engineering (ME)
Physics (PH)
Production and Industrial Engineering (PI)
Instrumentation Engineering (IN)
Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF)
Engineering Sciences (XE)
Mathematics (MA)
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PY)
Life Sciences (XL)

GG (Geology and Geophysics) paper shall consist of two parts called Part A and Part B. Part -A is common to both Geology and Geophysics candidates. Part -B will again contain two sections: Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geophysics). Geology candidates have to attempt questions in Section 1 only. Geophysics candidates will attempt questions in Section 2 only.

Papers XE and XL will be in general nature and consist of the following sections:

Engineering Mathematics (Compulsory part) - A
Fluid Mechanics - B
Materials Science - C
Solid Mechanics - D
Thermodynamics- E
Polymer Science and Engineering -F
Food Technology- G

XL paper sections (Life Sciences):

Chemistry (Compulsory section) - H
Biochemistry -I
Biotechnology -J
Botany- K
Microbiology -L
Zoology- M

Candidates appearing in XE or XL papers are required to answer three sections only. Sections (A) and (H) are compulsory in XE and XL papers, respectively. The candidate can choose any two out of the remaining sections listed against the respective papers. Candidate has to appear in one of the papers, mentioned above appropriate his / her qualifying degree. Candidate is free to choose any paper, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the respective institutions in which admission is expected.
