Osmania revamps Ph.D. admission norms from 2011

Hyderabad, November 15: Is it the time for tightening the selection process to get the best students out of thousands? The answer from Osmania University is, Yes. Osmania University, Hyderabad is already on its way to revamp it's Ph.D. admission process. In order to improve the quality of research, OU has introduced a series of changes to Ph.D. admission process. The University has changed the entrance examination and also increased the qualification marks to minimum 40 percent for general category students. The entrance test also is likely to be more tougher than it used to be.

Osmania University also changed minimum qualifying marks for SC and ST candidates. They have to secure at least 25 percent marks to be eligible to consider for admission into Ph.D. The changes were brought after the executive council of the University has made observations on the decreasing quality of the research in thesis submitted by students in the recent times. Osmania University has released the Ph.D. Eligibility Test notification last week and the admission process is likely to be completed by the end of this month.

As per the new guidelines, the deans of the departments will play decisive role in allocating guides for research scholars. The deans of the respective schools, faculties and departments will have to evaluate the performance of the research scholar and allocate guide. The reforms are also meant for reducing the number of Ph.D. admissions in various departments. OU admits about 200 Ph.D. scholars in all the faculties every year. The university is trying to decrease this number to discourage candidates to extend their stay on campus through Ph.D. admission. It is observed that about 40 percent of the candidates take Ph.D. admission to get hostel facility in the campus. The University is giving exemption to M.Phil qualified and UGC / CSIR NET qualified candidates from Ph.D. Eligibility Test. It is estimated that about 450 candidates apply to each department seeking admission for Ph.D.
