1) M.A. in History: This is a two year programme with four semesters. There will be compulsory courses in both Indian and non-Indian history. The programme is designed to expose the candidates to the history of human civilization with a focus on India. In the second year of the course, the department offer various specializations in specific areas of Indian History. The History Department conducts M.A. Entrance Examinations based on a wide array of different
types of questions. There will be an essay type and objective type questions in the entrance examination to assess the general aptitude and capability and subject knowledge of the candidates.
2) M.Phil History and Ph.D. History: The M.Phil course duration is two years which includes course work and dissertation. The focus of the research will be on the issues of historical interpretation and method. The Ph.D. programme is the extensive research course. Those admitted into Ph.D. without M.Phil have to pursue course work for an year. All the students have to undertake research on an approved topic under the guidance of a Faculty member. Noted faculty members in the department include Aloka Parasar Sen, RL Hangloo, Atluri Murali, Rekha Pande, Rila Mukherjee, Anindita Mukhopadhyaya etc.
The entrance examination for M.Phil and Ph.D programmes will assess the students on writing, major essay, short essays and short notes on key concepts in the discipline of history. One of the essays will be on the historiography or historical method. Candidates generally tested in the important historical facts and their ability to comprehend general concepts in history. For M.Phil and Ph.D. admissions, There will be an interview for those qualified in written examination. HCU announces admission notification during March or April every year.
