10th Class English Material - Grammar Model Questions

Expressing Obligation: We express obligation using 'should' and 'ought to'.
eg: i) We should respect elders.
ii) You ought to do homework regularly.

Should or ought to means that it would be a good thing to do. We often use should (do) or ought to (do) when we say what we think is a good thing to do or the right thing to do. We use should not (shouldn't) or ought not to (do) when we want to say that something is not a good thing to do.
Look at some more sentences:

1. You are very ill. You ought to see a doctor.
2. The circus is really good. You should go and see it.
3. The truck driver ought not to drive. He has had too much to drink.

The use of need not (needn't):

We use needn't (or do not need) in the absence of obligation or necessity.
eg: We needn't hurry. There is plenty of time. (= you don't need to hurry.)
