SSC Exams - English Grammar - Direct and Indirect Speech Rules with Examples

There are two ways of relating what a person has said: Direct Speech and Indirect Speech. In Direct speech we repeat the original speaker's exact words as:
i) "I have finished my homework", Kartheek said.
ii) Abhi said to Arnav, "We'll have a holiday tomorrow."

Remarks thus repeated are placed between inverted commas and a comma or colon is placed immediately before the remark. Direct speech is found in conversations in books, in plays and in quotations.

When we turn the Direct Speech into Indirect or Reported Speech, some changes are usually necessary. Let's see how the above sentences are reported.

i) Kartheek said that he had finished his homework.
ii) Abhi told Arnav that they would have a holiday the next day or the following day.

Rules:

i) Punctuation: Inverted commas (" ... ") and the comma (,) after said, etc. are omitted. Question marks and exclamation marks (?/ !) have to be usually dropped.

ii) Pronouns: Usually pronouns and possessives in the first and second persons are changed into third person. 'I' has become 'he' and 'my' has become 'his' in the first case and 'we' has become 'they' in the second case.

iii) Tenses: If the reporting verb is in the present and future tenses, there is usually no change in the tense of the reported verb. However, when the reporting verb is in the past tense, the following changes are usually made.

Present Simple/ Continuous → Past Simple/ Continuous
Present Perfect/ Past Simple → Past Perfect

In the examples above, 'has finished' has become 'had finished' in the first one, and 'will have' has become 'would have' in the second one.

iv) Time/ Place Expressions: Depending on the situation, time/ place expressions of nearness are usually changed into those of distance.

now → then
ago → before
this → that
these → those
today → that day
tomorrow → the next or the following day
yesterday → the previous day or the day before

In both the sentences, a special reporting word 'that' is used.

SSC English Grammar - Using Tenses in Reported Speech

Tenses: If the reporting verb is in the present and future tenses, there is usually no change in the tense of the reported verb. However, when the reporting verb is in the past tense, the following changes are usually made.

When the reporting verb is in the present tense, the tense of the verb in the Reported Speech does not change.

Eg: They say, "God is great".
They say that God is great.

It goes without saying: "Water runs deep''.
It goes without saying that water runs deep.

SSC Social Studies Imp Questions - Rampur Village Economy

Following are important questions and answers from Rampur - A Village Economy lesson of 10th Class / SSC Social Studies new syllabus for AP and Telangana students.

Q: What are the differences between the farmers and farm labourers?
A: Farmers: The farmers have some fields of their own and grow crops. They work in their own fields. They also hire some workers in their fields.  According to the land they hold, they are called small, medium and large farmers.

Farm labourers: . These labourers have no own lands.  They work in others fields as labourers.  Some of them have very less lands.  They are paid very less amount of wages.

Q: What is the difference between physical capital and working capital?
A: Tools and machines such as farmers plough to combined harvesters which are not used up in the process of production are called physical capital. Tractors, pump sets, computers, generators etc are the examples.

The various raw materials such as yarn or pulp used by weavers or paper industry which is used up in the process of production are called working capital. Clay for the potter, seeds and money for wages of the labourers in agriculture etc are the examples.

Q: What are the factors of production?
A: The factors of production are land, labour, capital knowledge and enterprise. In agriculture water is also a factor of production. The natural things are also factors used up in the process of production.

Q: What do you mean by multiple cropping?
A: To grow more than one crop on the same piece of land during the year is known as multiple cropping. It is the most common way of increasing production from land. Many farmers grow potatoes as third crop along with two main crops.

This multiple cropping has become compulsory because the population is increasing more and the cultivable land is decreasing. To meet the need of food grains it has become compulsory to grow more crops which is called multiple cropping.

Q: Write about irrigation in India.
A: Not all the villages in India have high irrigation facility. Apart from the riverside plains, coastal regions are well irrigated. Plateau regions such as Deccan plateau have low levels of irrigation. A little less than 40 percent of the total cultivated area in our country is irrigated. In the remaining areas, farming is largely rain fed.

10th Social Studies - Rampur - A Village Economy - Imp Questions

Q: What are the reasons for men receiving a higher wage than women for the same work? Discuss.

A: There is a difference in payments between the men and women though the work is same. Some hard physical work like tilling the land is done only by men. The wages for men are higher when the work is only meant for men.

The strength and stamina of male labour is more than that of the female workers. Critical work like climbing the hills, cutting the trees is given to only men. Normally the men work more than the women. In some cases it has become a tradition that women will be paid less. The wages are different from region to region, season to season and crop to crop.

Q: Why are the farm labourers poor?

A: Most of the farm labourers are landless. They work on daily wages especially in agriculture.  They receive very less wages. There is heavy competition for work among the farm labourers. They get work very often and that to not regular work.

Because of machines like tractors, threshes, harvesters the labourers have work for very less number of days. Many of them are not literates. They don't find jobs in other sectors. Some of them get work for a few days only especially in some specific seasons. So they are poor.

Q: Water is a natural and major resource for agricultural production. Explain the statement.

A: There is no doubt that the water is a natural and important resource for agricultural production. It has become a non available thing now-adays. Lifting of water by electric pump sets is increasing. Without water or irrigation facility we can't expect agricultural production. Nowadays linking of water sources like rivers is taking place.

Most of the cultivated areas are still rain fed. To bring water available to agriculture needs much capital. Otherwise agriculture production will be
affected. As the deforestation is going on the farmers are facing the problem of scanty rainfall. Water is not percolating properly nowadays and it is flowing towards rivers or oceans.

Hudhud was a strong tropical cyclone that caused extensive damage to
the city of Visakhapatnam and the neighbouring districts of
Vizianagaram and Srikakulam of Andhra Pradesh on 12 October 2014
(Sunday). Damages are estimated to be at least 70000 crore (US$11

City, unleashing widespread destruction and bringing the otherwise
bustling city of nearly 20 lakh people to a grinding halt. The damage
caused by Hudhud not only changed the landscape of the Port City, but
also made it the first city in the country to be directly hit by a
cyclone since 1891 as per the records of the IMD. Under the impact of
Hudhud that made a landfall on Sunday, accompanied by gusty winds and
heavy rains, the City of Destiny looked like a war-ravaged zone with
lakhs of uprooted trees, knocked down cell towers, transformers, and
telephone poles lying strewn at several places. Essential services
were disrupted and people remained indoors to escape nature's fury.
However, before Hudhud approached the shores, the government
machineries at the centre and the state had pooled their resources
together to warn people, arrange evacuation, and deploy rapid action
teams. As a result of such preemptive measures, number of deaths
remained at less than 50. Fortunately, the cyclone hit on Sunday. Had
it been on a working day, there would
have been more number of deaths.

1. What are the other names to Visakhapatnam City according to the passage?
2. Why was Visakhapatnam looked like a war-ravaged zone after being
hit by Hudhud cyclone?
3. Find out the synonym of 'anger' in the passage?
4. No other city in India was directly hit by a cyclone before 12
October 2014. State 'True' or 'False'
5. Hudhud caused less number of deaths. What was the reason?

Choose the correct answer.
I. It was not a high intensity cyclone
II. It hit the city on Sunday
III. The central and state governments had taken precautionary
measures effectively.

C) I and III only D) III only
